Climax is one of the leading creative lights of independent games development with an outstanding line of top published titles. It truly is an exciting and inspiring place to work, and you'll be based out of our Edinburgh studio in the heart of the city, overlooking the historic castle. We embrace those who see things in a different way, are not afraid to try new things, and push themselves out of their comfort zones. We are seeking a fully onsite Associate Art Director—a role that could also appeal to a motivated Lead Artist looking for their next challenge.

Responsibilities

  1. Creative Direction: Brainstorm and develop art styles, help illustrate game designs and pitches (often with hands-on drawing), and take ownership of the game's art style.
  2. Team Leadership: Manage the art team, ensure staff are assigned to projects according to resource plans, recruit new artists, and performance manage existing staff.
  3. Project Oversight: Curate and critique art for multiple simultaneous projects, review milestones for sign-off, and ensure the highest quality art is delivered.
  4. Strategic Planning: Work closely with studio production staff to produce estimates and schedules, and stay current on new software and work practices.
  5. Communication: Work directly with directors and the studio head, present art styles to clients/publishers, and promote Climax at universities and global events.

Requirements

  1. Several years of experience working as a Lead or Associate Art Director.
  2. Proven track record of leading an art team in creating top-tier mainstream AAA console games.
  3. Ability to draw and sketch ideas on the fly when creating new game ideas.
  4. Excellent knowledge of a wide variety of art styles and implementation from pitch to production.
  5. Broad knowledge of art tools (preferably Maya, Blender, Photoshop, ZBrush, and Substance) and 3rd party game engines.
  6. Solid understanding of all art disciplines.
  7. Demonstrable experience dealing with clients/publishers and excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.
  8. Absolute passion for games.

Benefits

  1. Excellent holiday package.
  2. Group Private Medical Insurance (BUPA), Group Life Insurance, Private Dental Insurance, and Group Income Protection.
  3. Company Pension Scheme, Cycle To Work Scheme, and Eye-Care Vouchers.
  4. Ongoing training and development with career progression.
  5. Friendly, focused, ambitious, and relaxed working environment.
  6. Regular socials, including project wrap parties, team events, and seasonal parties.
  7. In-house clubs ranging from board games and sports to D&D nights.

Role Information
